Le dernier bout... / The last stretch...

The last stretch of this hike goes along the lake and brings us to Hergiswil, in the canton of Nidwald.

And so, it's done: with the crossing of the cantons of Zug and Lucerne these past 4 days, I have now finished my tour of the 26 cantons of Switzerland!

What's next? Back to Italy? Continue the Huguenot Trail up through Germany? We'll see how things evolve between now and next year... There's always somewhere new to hike, and new encounters waiting for us!

Katholische Kirche Horw

In the Catholic church in Horw we see a statue of St. James as pilgrim, and another sign of solidarity with the people of Ukraine...

Direction Horw...

We leave the lakeshore to cross over a peninsula and head towards Horw. The trail goes up... but offers us some beautiful views over the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Today we start our hike along the lakeside and then follow trail n° 98, the "Waldstätterweg", which takes its name from the 4 "forest" cantons that border the lake of the same name: Lucerne, Schwyz, Uri and Nidwald (a "half-canton" of the original Unterwald). We pass in front of a tour boat that bears the name of the lake then, a bit further on, by a museum dedicated to the famous composer Richard Wagner, who lived here from 1866 to 1872.

Lucerne: l'église franciscaine / the Franciscan church

At the Tourist Office we had been told that we could find a "Stämpel" (rubber stamp) for our pilgrim passports in the Franciscan church, since Lucerne is on one of the the main routes of the Way of St. James across Switzerland. We have trouble finding the stamp but finally do so at the parish office next door to the church. The sacristan takes us back into the church and shows us a little sign under the statue of St. James... as a child, represented with his parents Salomé and Zebedee, and his brother John. Jesus called these two brothers "sons of thunder", so we can imagine that they must have had quite a personality!

Lucerne : l'église jésuite / the Jesuit church

Near the Kapellbrücke we visit the Jesuit church, where we discover various relics, appreciated by the Jesuits who led the Counter-Reformation against the iconoclast Protestants. There is also an altar dedicated to St. Nicholas of Flüe, 15th-century patron saint of Switzerland, and world-wide patron saint of Peace, affectionately nicknamed "Brother Klaus".

Before getting back to our trail, we take the time to visit a bit the city center of Lucerne. To start, a closer look at the famous covered bridge, the "Kapellbrücke". Built in the 14th century, this bridge was badly burned in 1993, and about 2/3 of its 147 triangular paintings of the city's history, painted in the 17th century, were destroyed. Some have been either restored or replicated.

We enjoyed the "Enzian" restaurant in Horw so much last night that we decided to return there this evening! And we had a nice chat with the staff at the end of the evening.

Near the convent of Gerlisberg, we begin our descent towards the lake and the city of Lucerne, with Mt. Pilatus rising majestically across the lake. A lovely waterfront, quite a few tourists, tour boats and, finally, the famous "Kapellbrücke" (chapel bridge), a covered wooden bridge that burned in 1993... and has been restored since.

Via Udlingenswil + ... Adlingenswil

We eat our picnic (thanks, Josiane!) next to the modern church in Udlingenswil, then we cross pastures on trail n° 3 (very "panoramic") to get to... Adlingenswil, which must be a "cousin" village. From now on, if we see a lake, it's no longer the Lake of Zug but the Lake of Lucerne, AKA Lake of the Four Cantons (Vierwaldstättersee).

L'église d'Adlingenswil est beaucoup plus traditionnelle... mais ça n'empêche pas la paroisse de proposer de l'eau bénite "to go"!

The church is Adlingenswil is much more traditional... but that doesn't stop the parish from making available holy water "to go"!

St Michaelskreuz - panorama

The magnificent 360° view is accompanied by orientation tables that allow you to identify which mountains you see on the horizon. Among others, the Alps of the canton of Schwyz, to the east.

St Michaelskreuz - chapelle

At the top of the hill, a nice view and the chapel of St. Michael's Cross, beautifully built with stone and wood. A statue there seems to be that of St. Roch, with his dog... but the absence of bread and a closer look make me consult Google, where I discover that it's probably a pig, associated with St. Anthony of the Desert, considered the first monk of the Church, a 3rd-century hermit in the Egyptian desert.

Modernité et les méthodes d'antan... / Modernity and methods of old...

The trail takes us up above the village, passing first by new houses with plant-covered roofs and/or solar panels, then through farms, before going up through woods and pastures. Among all that is modern, there remains an old Saurer truck from 1964.

Mardi / Tuesday 16 avril / April 2022 : Kanton Luzern

Michel and I set off again from Meierskappel (LU) - without the rain, fortunately! We rejoin the Alpine Panorama Trail (n° 3) that had guided us across Appenzell in July.

The church here is dedicated to the Assumption -- which they celebrated yesterday. At the entrance, a candle surrounded by the Ukrainian flag encourages us to support them with our prayers and actions.

Après l'orage... le risotto! / After the thundershower... risotto!

It's pouring rain for the car trip from Meierskappel to Horw (suburb of Lucerne), where we've reserved lodging for the next two nights. The rain finally calms down about 7 p.m. and we're able to find an Italian restaurant -- run by very friendly Albanians -- where the food is great!

Du beau temps ... vers l'orage... / From sunny weather... to thundershowers...

The trail goes up a bit and away from the lake, taking us to the village of Buonas (sounds more Italian than German...). Little by little, the sky becomes cloudier and more threatening. We arrive in Meierskappel, just inside the canton of Lucerne, at the same time as the thundershower: we just have time to jump into Michel and Josiane's van before we get drenched. Swiss timing!

St Jakob Kirche - Cham (ZG)

We arrive at the Church of St. James in Cham just as the Mass of Assumption Day is finishing. Nice encounter with Father Thomas, who offers us a lovely "Stämpel" in our pilgrim passports (they had a stamp made since there are a number of pilgrims who pass here on their way to Compostela). Then we eat our picnic on the church steps, under the watchful eye of a statue of St. James...
