La fameuse Passerelle à Farinet / The famous Farinet suspension bridge

It's thanks to my dog Jack that I was able to cross over this bridge, 136 meters (450 ft) above the gorge, despite my fear of heights...  Jack walked onto the bridge first; I followed him to the middle... then he followed me to the other end! (I think neither one of us looked down... but always straight ahead...)

My return to the VF will have to wait for a while... so here are some photos of my hikes around our new village of Saillon.

Presque 500 km / Almost 500 km

In the end, I was able to do 480 km from Saillon.  One more stage and I would have celebrated reaching the halfway point to Canterbury... But there are still many things and people to discover!

"Stop" ... For now... In hope of picking up where I left off, next time.

So... "Au revoir, Via Francigena! "

Retour à la maison... / Going home...

Samedi 17 sept 2016

Saturday 17 Sept 2016

I'm sad to say that I have had to stop my pilgrimage for the moment. The infection and blisters on the inside of my thighs are not healing and prevent me from walking properly. The rain forecast for the next few days would only add humidity to the problem, increasing the risk that things get worse.

A huge THANK YOU to all those who have shown an interest in my journey, have supported me and/or welcomed me in their home or elsewhere. All these encounters remain in my heart ... and will provide inspiration for my life and, maybe, for the book I hope to finally write now that I'm retired.

I look forward to seeing some you soon in Switzerland, and others on the pilgrim trail when I'm able to set off once again.

Brienne-le-Château -- Chavanges

Vendredi 16 sept 2016

Friday 16 Sept 2016

Off again on the VF, for a 15-km stage. My back and sore toe are much better. Not as sure for the infection; didn't bother me much during the day but far from healed this evening... Will see if I have to do part of tomorrow's stage in a car, as 28 km might be too much...

On the way today, wonderful encounter with redhead Giovanna, who invited me for coffee after my picnic. She wants to host and care for pilgrims in her home, which she is transforming/renovating.

Staying tonight at guest house of Agnès + Jean-François, in Chavanges, near a large 12th-century church and timbered houses "en pans de bois". Lots of discussion and sharing!

Pause à Brienne-le-Château

Jeudi 15 sept 2016

Thursday 15 Sept 2016

Rest day + visit to a very good osteopath...
If all goes well, I'll be back on the VF tomorrow... just before the "Sauerkraut Festival" here, where they expect 20'000 people!

Unienville -- Brienne-le-Château

Mercredi 14 sept 2016

Wednesday 14 Sept 2016

A half-stage that's going to take 2 days...

As I leave this morning, I observe the cows lying down in the pasture... and I think to myself: "Animals are smart enough to rest when they need it; humans not always so!"  A "prophetic" thought...

I only have 10 km to do today, but I'm having trouble. A painful toe, a pain in the upper back for the past 2 weeks, the interior of my thighs raw from rubbing, despite the protective ointment...  I decide to see a doctor  in Brienne-le-Château; good news, I can get in without an appointment this afternoon. Verdict: "surinfection" of the inner thighs (so antibiotics + new cream) and "crunched" toe to care for and protect better. Plus appointment tomorrow with an osteopath, so... rest day.

It's the 3rd Thursday in a row where I "have" to take a break; maybe a reminder that the rythm of one day of rest per week is not such a bad idea after all...

So I'll spend 2 nights in the former "hunters' cabin" that now serves for lodging pilgrims.

Bar-sur-Aube -- Unienville

Bar-sur-Aube -- Unienville

Mardi 13 sept 2016

Tuesday 13 Sept 2016

The day starts with rain (thanks to the city gardeners for the photo!), then gets progressively sunny, even hot (34°C = 93°F).

Nice encounters with Francine, who invites me for coffee at her house after my picnic, then with Pierre, who offers me orange juice and lots of spiritual sharing. He invites me to note my prayer intentions in a notebook in the church across the street; local people will join in prayer for those intentions. I gladly note my prayer topics in their notebook.

A monument by the roadside reminds me that this area was invaded in 1940... Some folks here lived through that...

Near the end of the day, I talk with a farmer who steps down from his tractor and speaks of his troubles: they were hoping for a "record" year... It may be the worst in a very long time, due to the lack of rain... He's counting on hemp (chanvre), difficult to harvest but in demand here for industry.

Just before the end of the stage, I pass through "L'Autre Monde" (the other world); somehow I imagined it differently...

An evening alone in the group hostel in Unienville, little village with no stores or café, no wifi ... I make myself a simple meal, with what I've brought in my backpack.

Clairvaux -- Bar-sur-Aube

Entering the Aube Department (10) and Champagne region.
Arrival in Bar-sur-Aube

Clairvaux -- Bar-sur-Aube

Lundi 12 sept 2016

Monday 12 Sept 2016

A shorter stage (15 km) which, after several km through the forest, brings me to the first vineyards of Champagne... The grape harvest starts in a week.

Then it's back to the hills, before a steep descent to Bar-sur-Aube. My knees complain but manage OK. I take advantage of an earlier than usual arrival (3 pm) to enjoy a good nap!

Châteauvillain -- Clairvaux

Châteauvillain -- Clairvaux

Dimanche 11 sept 2016

Sunday 11 Sept 2016

When I leave the pilgrim hostel this morning, I have no idea that this stage will be marked by three great historical figures:

First of all, road signs point to Colombey-les-deux-Eglises, village of Charles de Gaulle... After that, a long stretch walking on the road... Then, in the forest, I discover that I'm on the route taken by Joan of Arc... Finally, I know that I will be spending the night in Clairvaux, next to the abbey of the founder of the Cistercian monastic order, St Bernard of Clairvaux.

At the Fraternité de St Bernard, I am warmly welcomed by Sister Blandine, who has even prepared a delicious meal for me!
