9 Oct. : Dover -- Shepherdswell : 17 km (474 km total)
Après un vrai "English breakfast" dans un café à Douvres, nous prenons la route qui monte vers le château, appelé "la clé d'Angleterre" pour sa situation stratégique. Peu après, nous trouvons les premières balises du "North Downs Way" qui nous mènera jusqu'à Canterbury.
Des hameaux plutôt que des villages sur notre parcours aujourd'hui, alors nous sommes ravis de l'accueil qui nous est fait à deux maisons en route, avec thé et biscuits ! D'abord à Pineham, chez Karen + Charlotte, où Fred (81 ans) nous raconte ses souvenirs de la guerre: le shrapnel a touché sa maison. Puis à West Langdon, où Joe nous laisse profiter d'un joli lieu à l'abri du vent...
Le chemin est assez bien balisé... mais on se perd quand même 3 fois en route: difficile de suivre un sentier qui traverse un champ qui vient d'étre labouré... Du jamais vu!
After a real English breakfast at a café in Dover, we climb the hill toward Dover Castle, called the "key to England" for its strategic position. Shortly after the castle, we see the first trail markers for the North Downs Way, which will lead us all the way to Canterbury.
Today's hike takes us through hamlets rather than villages, so we're delighted by the wonderful English hospitality in two houses along the way, where they offer us tea and biscuits! First all in Pineham, at Karen + Charlotte's, where 81-year-old Fred tells us about the war, when shrapnel hit their house... Then in West Langdon, where Joe lets us take a break in his garden, sheltered from the wind...
The way is pretty well marked... but we still lose the trail 3 times: it's tough to follow a trail across a field that's just been plowed... Something we've never seen before!
8 Oct. : Calais -- Dover (Douvres) : 6 km de marche entre gîtes + ferry (457 km total)
Dimanche, j'ai marché environ 15 km, dans les villes de Calais + Douvres... mais je ne "compte" que 6 km, entre les gîtes + le ferry, en portant le sac.
Après une traversée de la Manche tranquille, j'ai eu la joie d'aller chercher ma fille Bethany à la gare de Douvres; en vacances pour 10 jours en Angleterre, elle vient marcher avec moi de Douvres à Canterbury.
Sunday, I walked about 15 km, in the cities of Calais + Dover... but I'll only "count" 6 km, between where I stayed and the ferry, carrying the backpack.
After a smooth crossing of the Channel, I was glad to go meet my daughter Bethany at the train station in Dover; she's on holiday for 10 days in England, and will walk with me from Dover to Canterbury.

Ayant réservé par Internet hier, j'ai droit à un accompagnement personnel à travers toutes les formalités douanières ... jusqu'à sur le bateau... et je suis le seul passager dans ce bus! / Having reserved yesterday by Internet, I have a personal guide who takes me through all the customs formalities... and right onto the ferry... and I'm the only passenger on the bus!

7 Oct. : Guînes -- Calais : 14 km (451 km total)
Comme prévu, je renonce au "détour" via Wissant, même si c'est attesté que Sigéric est passé par là en 990... Ça ferait 23 km de plus et il fait mauvais temps... Donc je ne verrais pas grand-chose et il faudrait marcher soit le long d'une route, soit sur le sable, ce qui est moins génial avec un gros sac à dos et des souliers de marche que pieds nus en plein été...
J'opte donc pour le chemin "direct" de Guînes à Calais, le long de deux canaux. Pas de pluie le matin, mais pluie + fort vent depuis midi, jusqu'à mon arrivée à l'auberge de jeunesse près de la mer. Au passage, je réserve ma place sur le ferry qui m'amènera à Douvres demain après-midi. Puis ce sera la dernière ligne droite jusqu'à Canterbury !
As foreseen, I decide not to go via Wissant, even though it's historically attested that Sigeric went that way in 990 A.D. ... It would mean 23 km more and the weather is miserable... So I wouldn't see anything and I'd have to walk either along a busy road, or along the sandy beach, which is less appealing with a heavy backpack and hiking boots than barefoot on a summer day...
So I choose the "direct" route from Guînes to Calais, alongside two canals. No rain on the morning, but rain and strong winds after noon, all the way to the youth hostel near the sea. On the way, I reserve my place on the ferry that will take me across to Dover tomorrow afternoon. Then it will be the final 2 days, straight on to Canterbury!
