Notes jeudi/Thursday 21 juin 2018

  -- Le gîte à Beaumont où j'ai dormi cette nuit a accueilli samedi dernier un groupe de marcheurs du Cursillo oecuménique... mené par ma fille Bethany;
  -- J'arrive à Genève le même jour que le Pape François visite ici le Conseil Oecuménique des Eglises;
  -- En arrivant à Carouge, je vois assises sur la terrasse d'un restaurant 2 amies du Cursillo francophone; elles m'offrent un verre et on partage un bon moment;
  -- Je termine mon parcours au Musée International de la Réforme, à côté de la Cathédrale, où l'on m'offre l'entrée pour fêter la fin de ce sentier encore très peu connu.

   This "Protestant" journey of 340 km finishes in very ecumenical fashion:
  -- The pilgrim hostel where I slept last night hosted last Saturday a group of hikers from the ecumenical Cursillo movement ... hikers led by my daughter Bethany;
  -- I arrive in Geneva the same day as Pope Francis' historic visit to the World Council of Churches here;
  -- As I arrive in Carouge, I see seated on the terrace of a restaurant 2 friends from the French Cursillo, who offer me a drink and a nice time of sharing;
  -- I finish my hike at the International Museum of the Reformation, next to the Cathedral, where they offer me free admission to celebrate finishing this trail which is still unknown to most people.

Notes mercredi/Wednesday 20 juin 2018

   This next-to-last stage (23 km) is very sunny, and hot... Michel and I share a good meal in Cruseilles before he takes a bus for Geneva, on his way back home.
   I continue on the trail and, shortly after St-Blaise, I get a view overlooking Geneva and its "jet d'eau"! At the same time, I see the familiar trail markers for the GR65, Way of St. James, or Camino de Santiago. Last July, with Bethany and Katja, we were following the same trail in the opposite direction...
   This evening there are 3 other pilgrims with me in the hostel in Beaumont, where I also stayed the night in 2003 on my way to Santiago.

Notes mardi/Tuesday 19 juin 2018

   A shorter stage today (16 km) gives us time to visit the old town of Annecy, before walking several km on sidewalks to get out of the city.
   Along the way, we discover the St-Joseph-des-Fins Basilica, designed by the Benedictine architect Dom Paul Bellot. A product of the renewal movement in sacred art of the 1930s, it was finally consecrated in 1962.
   We link up with the Waldensian Trail in Promery and follow it almost to our hotel, located next to the motorway... and pass the 300-km mark for our hike.

Piste cyclable Faverges - Annecy

Cycling path between Faverges + Annecy

Notes lundi/Monday 18 juin 2018

   Our longest stage -- 30 km -- took us today from Faverges to Annecy.
   The former railway line has been transformed into a bike path (open also to pedestrians) and attracts numerous cyclists. When we approached Lake Annecy, we preferred a more varied path that goes close to the lake... even though that also made our stage a bit longer.
   The Waldensians must not have a warm welcome when they spent the night here in Annecy, where the bishop of Geneva took refuge at the time of the Reformation and where St. Francis of Sales was a leading figure of the Counter-Reformation...
   A few years ago I shared a meal with the bishop of Annecy and the parish priest in St-Gingolph... Fortunately times have changed since the 17th century!

Château de Miolans

Miolans Castle

Junction of rivers Arc + Isère

Notes samedi/Saturday 16 juin 2018

   Another 19 km today, fairly flat terrain... but this time we dare to try to find another way, not on asphalt (I'm the one who has to "dare"; Michel is always ready to try a different way than the "official" route...). Result: half of this stage will be much more enjoyable for our feet and our legs... and our nerves!
   We pass first at the base of the mountain which is home to the Miolans Castle, terrible prison at the time of the Waldensian Exile; 3 of their pastors were imprisoned there for 4 years, including long months in the part called "Hell", 20 meters underground... One of them died there... No comparison possible with these 2 retired Swiss pastors hiking this trail on vacation...
   Our route will have made a big detour where the Arc River flows into the Isère, taking into account that this area was covered by swamps inthe 17th century. And they didn't have the same bridges we do today...
   Nice encounter with some local folks along the way in the village of Chagne, who invite us to stop and have a beer and share a bit of our lives.
   We're staying tonight at the Grand Cellier, in Tournon, an historical house transformed into guest rooms.

Joëlle, Philippe + Jeff à Aiguebelle

Temple protestant à Bourgneuf... fermé à clef, hélas...

Protestant church in Bourgneuf.... locked, unfortunately...

On marche trop souvent sur le goudron...

We walk too often on asphalt roads...

Notes vendredi/Friday 15 juin 2015

Chapeau!

   Today's stage is "average": 19 km on flat roads, unfortunately always on asphalt -- as is too often the case on this trip. Quiet country roads are better than busy highways, but we see that the authors of our guidebook were not able to find other unpaved paths that must exist here...
   On the positive side, the weather was sunny, which helps morale. And we had a nice encounter with pilgrims Joëlle + Philippe, from Valence (France), on their way to Assisi, then Rome, then to the town of Padre Pio in southern Italy. Joëlle is riding her bike, and Philippe is on foot; 30 km a day, and they are camping... Bravo!

Notes jeudi/Thursday 14 juin 2018

   Today's stage is flat, often on small country roads with little traffic... fairly enjoyable, even if walking on asphalt is not as nice as a trail of pine needles.
   At the end of the stage we arrive in the small village of Epierre, where I stop to ask for directions to our lodging. The man I ask, François, invites us for a beer and then ... drives us to our B&B and then... invites us to have dinner with him in his favorite restaurant! An unfogettable encounter!
   Our B&B is in a beautiful house... complete with a swimming pool!

Descente sur Modane

Heading down to Modane

Bus Modane -- St-Jean-de-Maurienne

Notes mercredi/Wednesday 13 juin 2018

   Today was a very full day: 27 km for a total of 180 km in 9 days, and some "excitement"...
   I started the day badly with a poorly-closed water bottle leaking all over the inside of my backpack... Then the trail markers gave contradictory distance indications... Then Michel had trouble digesting his sandwich (he's better now)... Then I fell hard on the pavement just before arriving at our hotel (not badly hurt)... We're grateful that none of these difficulties was serious.
   Along the way we had a great view of the impressive fortifications garding the narrow passage at L'Esseillon, built first by the Italians to protect against an invasion by the French, then later adapted by the French to protect against an invasion from Italy! It's crazy how much people can spend when they're afraid...
   In Modane, we followed my guidebook's advice and took the bus to St-Jean-de-Maurienne, to avoid a long walk along a dangerous highway.
   We then walked the last 12 km to Sainte-Marie-de-Cuines, where we're spending the night.

Notes mardi/Tuesday 12 juin 2018

   Today my guidebook has us follow the "Chemin du Petit Bonheur" ("Trail of Happiness"), well-marked... while warning us that there are places where we can get lost... which is what happens to us! Since a little story by Bruno Ferrero (my daily meditation) encouraged us yesterday to bless rather than curse those who make our lives difficult, I had to learn to bless those who had marked this trail...
   We passed through some beautiful countryside and forests -- once inhabited by lots of wolves and bears, as my guidebook reminds us, making this area dangerous for the Walensian travellers, already very weak physically.
   We're spending the night in a real "gîte" ( hostel) here in Bramans, village of 400 residents, with some lovely old houses which often bear a framed explanation of the occupation of person who lived there a century or more ago -- very interesting!
