"Petit" café pour Beatrice...

Beatrice + Barbara, B&B Dolfini

Wonderful hospitality here in Bioggio at Beatrice's B&B Dolfini. She (at left in photo) is with Barbara, from Poland, who has come to help out, as Beatrice's father Giorgio, 95, who lives here in the house, is very ill.
I am only the 2nd VFL pilgrim that Beatrice has hosted...

La Route de la Reine / The Queen's Road

Oser demander... / Dare to ask...

Not as many fountains here. I have to overcome my hesitations and dare to ask for water, in front of this house, because at 37°C (97°F), you MUST drink... The people even encourage me to douse my face, neck, etc. with cool water, which really helps...

Il fait chaud... / It' hot.

This lady who is walking away came over to me while I was writing a postcard to a friend, sitting in front of the village post office...  She obviously needed to tslk to someone... and my difficulty understanding her local dialect didn't seem.to bother her...

Jour / Day 18 : Rivera -- Bioggio

This last stage 100% Swiss will see me again following Margot's advice for a less-demanding itinerary, so as not to worsen my blisters or knee...

My arrival at the Monte Ceneri Pass is disappointing: military installations, gas stations and the now inevitable "shop" that goes with them (where at least I can get a cold drink...). Like at the Lukmanier Pass, almost nothing left but business...
Speaking of figures, this is where I go over the 400-km mark for this hike, before hiking downhill to Rivera.

A nicer itinerary than along the road...

Change!

After lunch in Cadenazzo, I decide to change itineraries and rejoin the "official VFL" route drawn in red on my map. From here it should be more direct to the pass... and mainly on shaded dirt trails. Even though it's somewhat steep... and not well maarked, according to some...

My choice to follow the bike path makes for a flatter route... but sometimes not very interesting. I have to accept the consequences of my choice... You can't have it all!

Juan Manuel + Giovanna + Jeff

THE encounter of the day starts when a man standing behind me in a café sees the Camino pilgrim shell on my pack. He has done the Camino Primitivo. Then he and his companion invite me to join them for a coffee... followed by an hour of sharing about deep and very personal experiences, although, up until a few minutes ago, we had never seen each other...
All that because I left the marked bike path to go get a pastry... and because Juan Manuel saw my pilgrim shell... and especially because Someone wanted us to have this encounter...

Bike route

Several options are possible to go over the Monte Ceneri. Since I hesitated to do "unnecessary" uphill or downhill efforts, considering the state of my feet + legs, Margot advised the "winter" route via bike paths...

Jour / Day 16 : Soucis... / Worries...

Two worries in the last 24h:
1) an ugly-looking toe that has suffered over the past 2 weeks, and
2) impossible to connect my cell phone to a "wet" charger... that I carry in a waterproof sack!
Without the charger, no more photos or news for this blog...
Without improvement of the toe's condition, the end of my hike...
I'm very happy to report this evening that the toe is doing better, and that I have a new charger!

A niveau... / Level...

The church adapts to the form of the rock it's built on... but the altar is level... Another parable?

Margot (AIVF)

The KEY...

If I hadn't stopped at the Tourist Office in Olivone, I wouldn't have known I needed to get (+ bring back) a KEY to visit the beautiful church of San Carlo di Negrentino, already a big detour from the trail.... and the place to get the key has changed!

Ospizio Camperio

Unable to find affordable lodging in Olivone, I had to take a bus 3 km back up the hill... This "hospice" "saved" me!

This kind of trail is NOT my favorite... It requires constant concentration and is not appreciated by my feet or knees

Canicule ... / Heat wave...

La météo annonce jusqu'à... 39° cette semaine! Ça promet...

Weather forecast up to... 39°C (102°F) the next few days! Sounds "promising"...

Ça descend toujours...

Still heading downhill...

Jour / Day 13 : Lukmanier Pass - Olivone : "Si, conosco la Via Francisca del Luccomagno..."

In 13 days of hiking, this is the first person I've met along the way (not counting lodgings contacted by AIVF) who has heard of the VFL ! "It was on TV..."
This brief encounter does me good! I've often had the impression that I was "preaching in the desert" about a pilgrim trail that didn't interest anybody...

... Aïe !! / Ouch !!

... but there were also passages that hurt my knees and feet... 1000 m (3300 ft) of downhill today.

I almost  followed a different trail... but was glad to find this one, "discreetly" marked, more pleasant for my legs + feet...

Lukmanier: modern chapel + site of the former hospice of Santa Maria, beginning of the Ticino valley of the same name.

Je n'y arrive pas... / Can't make it...

After 15 km, I'm only halfway in a stage planned at 22 km... Another 3 1/2 hours of uphill would be too much for me... So it's an exhausted and disappointed pilgrim who gets on a bus to take me to Lukmanier Pass, where I reserved a room..
