... avec un jour d'avance / ... one day ahead

4 juillet / July 2026: Retour sur le chemin des Huguenots et des Vaudois du Piémont – Back to the Huguenot and Waldensian Trail (HWT) : Calw  Schönau

 

En ce jour où les USA fêtent 250 ans d’indépendance, je vais bientôt repartir encore plus loin dans le passé pour suivre les pas des Huguenots et des Vaudois du Piémont, en Allemagne. C’était autour de l’an 1700 que se sont créées les premières « colonies » de réfugiés protestants francophones dans le sud-ouest du pays, un phénomène que je n’ai pas vu en Italie, en Suisse ou dans mes deux
premières semaines de marche en Allemagne l’année dernière. Ici, nous allons rencontrer leurs descendants, ainsi que des musées et des monuments créés pour faire connaître cette histoire.

Je dis « nous », car cette fois-ci je vais cheminer avec un nouveau copain de marche, mon voisin Jean-Philippe Dupraz, qui vient de prendre sa retraite. Michel Bovay, qui m’a accompagné l’été dernier, et lors de plusieurs longues randonnées avant cela, me rejoindra au mois d’août pour parcourir le chemin de St-Patrick, en Irlande… mais plus sur cette randonnée-là plus tard, dans un mois !

Voici à votre droite la carte fournie par l’association « Hugenotten- und Waldenserpfad e.V. », que je remercie encore pour leur aide précieuse à préparer ces marches en Allemagne. Le parcours cet été partira de Calw, où je me suis arrêté en 2025, jusqu’à Schönau, près de Heidelberg. Je me remets gentiment d’un orteil fracturé début mai, donc la préparation physique n’a pas été idéale cette fois-ci, mais on va y aller doucement et on verra bien !

On this day, as the USA celebrates 250 years of independence, I will soon be traveling even further back in time to follow in the footsteps of the Huguenots and the Waldensians in Germany. It was around the year 1700 that the first “colonies” of French-speaking Protestant refugees were established in the southwestern part of the country—a phenomenon I didn’t encounter in Italy, Switzerland, or during my first two weeks of walking in Germany last year. Here, we’ll meet their descendants, as well as visit museums and monuments created to shed light on this history.

I say “we” because this time I’ll be walking with a new hiking buddy, my neighbor Jean-Philippe Dupraz, who has just retired. Michel Bovay, who accompanied me last summer and on several long hikes before that, will join me in August to hike the St. Patrick’s Way in Ireland… but more on that hike later, in a month!

Here on your right is the map provided by the “Hugenotten- und Waldenserpfad e.V.” association, whom I’d like to thank once again for their invaluable help in planning these hikes in Germany. This summer’s route will start in Calw—where I stopped in 2025—and go all the way to Schönau, near Heidelberg. I’m slowly recovering from a toe fracture I sustained in early May, so my physical preparation hasn’t been ideal this time around, but we’ll take it easy and see how it goes!

Nach Hause...

Me voici au départ de mon hôtel à Calw (c'est là où vous voyez le parasol vert), pour rentrer en train chez moi. Fatigué mais content, j'espère pouvoir bien négocier les 4 changements de train dans des gares que je connais peu ou pas du tout...

Here I am, leaving my hotel in Calw (that's where you see the green parasol), to take the train home. Tired but happy, I hope to be able to negotiate the 4 train changes at stations I know little or not at all...

Dernière étape / Last stage

Aujourd'hui, l'anniversaire de mes 74 ans, je trouverai moins de gens avec qui parler sur mon chemin. Ce sera plutôt jour de rencontre avec moi-meme...

Le ciel est nuageux, la température bien plus agréable pour marcher. Je verrai passer des dizaines de cyclistes mais très peu de marcheurs, donc peu de contact. Mais j'aurai du temps pour chanter, pour prier, pour penser à ceux et celles que j'aime...
En arrivant à Calw, j'aurai fait 16 km aujourd'hui, 245 km en 2 semaines sur les traces des Huguenots et des Vaudois du Piémont. Encore peu de signes visibles de leur histoire  - on m'en promet davantage après Calw - mais j'ai eu des occasions d'imaginer ce qu'ils devaient vivre il y a 340 ans... et de voir comment les gens accueillent ou non les réfugiés et autres voyageurs de notre époque. Oui, plein de choses à méditer...

Today, my 74th birthday, I'll find fewer people to talk to along the way. Instead, it will be a day to encounter myself...

The sky is cloudy, the temperature much more pleasant for walking. I'll see dozens of cyclists passing by, but very few walkers, so not much contact. But I'll have time to sing, to pray, to think of those I love...
By the time I reach Calw, I'll have covered 16 km today, 245 km in 2 weeks, in the footsteps of the Huguenots and Waldensians. Still few visible signs of their history - I'm promised more after Calw - but I've had plenty of opportunities to imagine what it must have been like 340 years ago... and to see how people welcome, or don't welcome, the refugees and other travellers of our time. Yes, plenty to ponder...

Hermann Hesse + Calw

Hermann Hesse (1877-1962), né à Calw, fut un grand écrivain allemand, Prix Nobel de littérature en 1946, opposant aux excès de l'industrialisation et de l'urbanisation. Il a notamment écrit Siddhartha et Le loup des steppes, dont le groupe rock "Steppenwolf" ('Born to be Wild') a tiré son nom.

On voit ici à Calw sa statue et sa maison natale, dans un Marktplatz de toute beauté. 

Hermann Hesse (1877-1962), born in Calw, was a great German writer and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946, who opposed the excesses of industrialization and urbanization. His works include Siddhartha and Steppenwolf, from which the rock band "Steppenwolf" ('Born to be Wild') took its name.

Here, in Calw, we see his statue and the house where he was born, in the beautiful Marktplatz.

Rencontres / Encounters (4)

De chouettes rencontres aussi aujourd'hui. D'abord ce matin à Nagold, où un homme de mon âge voit ma coquille St-Jacques et me dit qu'il a déjà fait le Camino par 3 ou 4 chemins différents. C'est Jürgen, et ses conseils pour mon étape d'aujourd'hui seront précieux!

Puis un homme avec un labrador chocolat qui me rappelle notre regretté Jack. Quelques phrases qui expriment une sorte de communion, et le contact physique avec ce beau chien qui me fait du bien.

Lors de ma pause pique-nique, ce sont Thomas et Ulrike, cyclistes à la retraite, qui partagent leurs expériences du Camino et leur passion pour la littérature de Hermann Hesse, originaire de Calw, où je dormirai ce soir et où je finirai mon parcours demain.
Enfin, une jeune fille de 16 ou 17 ans qui m'aide à acheter un billet de train de Wildberg à Calw, quand j'ai fini mon étape cet après-midi... juste avant l'arrivée du train!

Some nice encounters today too. First this morning in Nagold, where a man my age sees my scallop shell and tells me he's already done the Camino by 3 or 4 different routes. It's Jürgen, and his advice for today's stage will be invaluable!
Then a man with a chocolate Labrador that reminds me of our late Jack. A few sentences expressing a kind of communion, and the physical contact with this beautiful dog does me a world of good.
During my picnic break, it's Thomas and Ulrike, retired cyclists, who share their experiences of the Camino and their passion for the literature of Hermann Hesse, originally from Calw, where I'll be staying tonight and finishing my journey tomorrow.
Finally, a young girl of 16 or 17 who helps me buy a train ticket from Wildberg to Calw, when I finish my stage this afternoon... just before the train arrives!
