Duomo di Pavia : intérieur

8 énormes piliers soutiennent la coupole.

8 enormous pillars supportent the cupola.

One of the largest cupolas in Italy, the dome of the Pavia cathedral was planned in the 15th century... but finally built in the 19th...

Pavia : Francesco

This gentleman, customer at the kiosque near the Ponte Coperto where I tried to buy a souvenir patch from Pavia to sew on my pack, he offered to accompany me to try and find one... A retired engineer, he became my improvised guide to visit the city center, even offering me an espresso and a pastry!
As for the patch, apparently it's been years since they sold any here...

Crédenciale / Pilgrim "passport"

Derrière chaque tampon, des souvenirs, des visages, parfois des émotions...

Behind each stamp, memories, faces, sometimes emotions...

PAVIA : Ponte Coperto

32 km aujourd'hui, presque 600 depuis Constance.... Toute une aventure!

It's after 8 pm when I finally arrive at the covered bridge that leads to the Borgo Ticino, where I'll be staying at hostel Santa Maria in Betlem.
32 km today, almost 600 since I left Constance... Quite an adventure!

Il fait CHAUD ! / It's HOT! (38°C = 100°F)

"Turbo-sieste" / "Power nap"

No shade, no cafés, no fountains, not even a house where I could ask for water... for 16 km! I try to get some energy wherever I can...

Italy produces a lot of rice -- "risotto", anyone?  The main crops here are rice and corn (maize)... and the bike paths are almost always in the sun...

L'exception !

Very little human contact this morning: dozens of cyclists pass me, most without even a "buongiorno"... This group is the exception: several families on a "bike day" along the canal, who stop to talk with me. One of them did "his" Via Francigena, going a way that allowed him to do the trip on horseback...

Infos historiques

You see a lot of signs with historical info along the way, in Italian + English. For example this one, which explains that "Morimondo" expresses the idea of "dying to the world" i.e. living the resurrection.

Day 25 : Morimondo -- PAVIA !

This last day will be very long... before some prettier images of Pavia than this road sign!

I have to leave the canal to get to the lodging reserved for me by Ferruccio, in Morimondo. After 29 km in the heat, I'm not quite " moriBondo"... but I've got some blisters to care for this evening!

In Abbiate Grasso, I leave the Naviglio Grande to follow the Naviglio di Bereguardo, towards Pavia. It's smaller and especially calmer...

Abbiate Grasso : Alfredo + staff

Another request for water introduces me to Alfredo and his team, who organize summer camps + sports days with the local Catholic parishes. They offer me a big bottle of cold water and .... a popsicle!

Keep cool !

Yesterday, I forgot to use Margot's method to beat the heat: a wet towel around the neck... It really helps!

Il faut de l'eau... / Got to have water...

Paolo

In a café in Ponte Vecchio, Paolo sees my pack and tells me he has done the Via Francigena, from here to Rome, on his bike. Then he pays my coffee and croissant!

Davide

This local cyclist stops to talk with me. His grandfather's aunt emigrated to the USA (NY, then Seattle) in 1909, "like 3 million other Italians, mainly poor..." he says.

"This is NOT a bike path..." but cyclists are "tolerated"... and they are much more numerous than those on foot!

Jour / Day 24 : Castelletto di C. -- Morimondo

Today's long stage is dominated by "Il Naviglio (Grande)", the first majot canal in Europe, built in the 12th-13th centuries to link Milan to Lago Maggiore + Switzerland for trade. The VFL follows the "tow road" along the canal.

Super service!

My waiter at the restaurant this evening was very friendly and very understanding re. my fatigue...

Very friendly welcome by Franco at "la Scala di Giacobbe" (Jacob's Ladder), religious house.

Cuggiono : rencontre

Marco + Svetlana, Italian and Russian, along with their kids, stop to talk and share their ideas about Italy today, their hopes for the future. An unexpected  exchange, when I'd just decided to sit down and drink some water...

Sur la route... / On the road...

There are unfortunately several sections in today's stage where the "trail" is along the road, where there's not always a lot of place for the pilgrim...

Gelato!

The heat makes me weak at times, where  I "fade out" and have trouble getting going again... In Buscate, first place in hours where I can find an open café or store, a dose of wonderful Italian ice cream helps me find some energy...

Le long du chemin... / Along the way...

Seeing far too many "improved dumps" along the way, I think of Einstein's famous quote: "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe."

Moins agréable... / Less enjoyable...

But there are also sections in the sun, where I have the impression that I just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other... hoping that I didn't miss a trail marker while I had my head down...

Jour / Day 23 : Castellanza -- Castelletto di Cuggiono

The first km today are in the Parco Alto Milanese, often in the shade, with rabbits hopping across the path in front of me...

This evening I'm at the Stoà, a Catholic training center for young adults in Busto Arsizio, a city next to Castellanza. Roberta came to pick me up and will drive me back to Castellanza tomorrow morning.
They've got everything for the pilgrim here! Food to prepare, kitchen, washing machine, terrace, etc. "This is your house. Make yourself at home!" Which is exactly what I'm doing!

"Granita" sicilienne

I discover a Sicilian alternative to the "gelato" I appreciate so much...

Arrivée à Castellanza : 36°C (96°F)

Alessandro + Samuele

These two guys were interested in my hike. They plan to ride their bikes from the north of Italy to its southern limit.

Il fallait demander... / I had to ask...

Not many places to get water, during this stage... and the heat makes you thirsty. So at one point, I had to go off the trail and ring the bell at a nearby house. They handed me this bottle through the gate... which allowed me to keep going, without risk...

I saw a number of abandoned factories and other businesses along the way today... Testimonies to the fragile nature of our humain projects...

Torba

The woman at this place in Torba (recommended by Ferruccio) did all she could to prepare a good picnic for the pilgrim, at a good price! (She didn"t want me to take her picture)

Jour / Day 22 : Castiglione Olona -- Castellanza

A flat stage today, often in the shade -- fortunately, because it's hot! -- following an old railway line along the Olona River... My feet and my legs appreciate it!

This Sunday, the young men of this town will do a different version of the "Palio" of Siena... but still a race between different neighborhoods.

Castiglione: Antonio + Michele

These guys greeted me as I finished the day's hike. When he learned where I'd hike from, Michele (on right) said, "Come in, I want to offer you a drink!"

Cycliste

This local bike rider had trouble believing I've done almost 500 km on foot.... "I've got to show your picture to my friends!"

Sentier tranquille...

A nice, peaceful trail...

Une idée originale...

The town of Morazzone tried to motivate its dog owners for a cleaner town...

Easier ups and downs today...

Jour / Day 21 : Varese - Castoglione Olona

The VFL goes through the center of Varese, a pretty city of 80,000 residents.

Vue du Sacro Monte, Varese en bas

View from the top of Sacro Monte. City of Varese is down below.

At the top, a coffee bar that deserves its name! Pilgrim Rosanna is next to me.

In each chapel, an episode from the Bible with 17th-century statues and ... with imagination! Note the presence of the dog in the midst of this "Presentation of Jesus in the Temple"...

2 km of uphill climb, 14 chapels + the church on top, located at an altitude of 880 m (= 500 m higher than Varese...).  I was able to count on one hand the number of people crazy enough to do this on a hot, sunny afternoon... including me, of course! But Ferruccio said it was "obligatorio" for a VFL pilgrim...

Emmanuela, Enza + Rocchietta

I said hello to these three ladies as I began the climb of the Sacro Monte di Varese. We talked about pilgrimage and they said I should see their friend Rosanna, who has a café-bar called  "Il Convivio" in the old town at the top of the hill. She has done the Camino de Santiago.
