The old town... to visit more thoroughly when we come back to hike the 2nd half.

Pont couvert sur l'Aare à Büren a. A.

Covered bridge over the Aar River

We stop here, halfway between Basel and Vevey, after 110 km, since we only had 5 days for the moment. With hope we can do the other half in 2021!

Rüti bei Büren (BE)

Beautiful romanesque church (11th or 12th century) with its 15th-century frescoes.

Arch (BE) : temple protestant / Protestant church

Très grandes maisons de fermes partout ici

Very large farmhouses are everywhere here

The baptismal font is placed in the center in Protestant churches here, as I saw also in eastern Switzerland.

Chemin de Rome / The way to Rome

This street in a village near Solothurn reminds us that Nikulas and many others travelled this way heading to Rome.

A good meal at the "Federal Brewery" restaurant, with a good beer, of course!

Brasserie Fédérale

In French over the door, in this German-speaking city...

Fontaine à Soleure / Fountain in Solothurn

Solothurn is a beautiful city, even without sunshine...

Des fermes très propres / Very clean farms

The farmers here really keep their stables clean!

Une descente pénible / Rough trail down

Old injuries make the 700-meter descent towards Solothurn painful for me: steep slope, wet rocks not always stable and often covered with damp dead leaves hurt my knees and left foot...

Hinter Weissenstein 1182 m.

... to arrive at this ridge, where we cross the Jura Ridges Trail (n° 5).

Mousse / moss

... passing some of Nature's artwork...

... encore...

... puis à travers la forêt...

... and then through the forest...

Ça monte rude... / Tough climb...

From the train stop in Gänsbrunnen, the trail climbs steeply... first across pastures...

Train...

Following the advice of yesterday's "angels" (and my knees + my feet...), we're taking the train for a bit, to save our strength for the hike over the pass between this valley and Solothurn.

Fromages locaux chez Monique

Local cheeses at Monique's house:

Tous excellents!! All excellent!

Monique

MERCI, Monique!!

Our "angel" in Moutier offered us extraordinary hospitality and a fantastic meal: régional specialties, local wines and cheeses, homemade food.... and wonderful sharing about ideas and personal experiences. THANK YOU, Monique!!

On our way down from the 2nd ridge toward Moutier, we lost the trail... Without the help of this family, who led us down the rest of the way, while the sun was setting, our arrival would have been much more complicated! More "angels" for lost pilgrims...

Vaches + falaises / Cows + cliffs

Nice scene on our way up to the first ridge at 1100 meters

L'eau est vitale / Water is vital

We needed to top off in water in Vellerat but the local réservoir was out if order... So this neighbor offered us 2 big bottles of water. A big thanks to this "angel" along the path!

Lessive à sécher / Laundry to dry

With the humidity in the air, my laundry from last night wasn't dry this morning... So, our picnic break in the sun was the chance to "catch up"!

Montée vers Vellerat

Restaurant La Couronne

A nice warm soup to warm up in Courrendlin... before hiking up and over the Mountain of Moutier.

We finally arrived at 7:30 pm in Delémont, capital of the Canton of the Jura... after 31 km of hiking... That deserves a beer!

Michel had just been talking about eating fish this morning, as we hiked... And the fish was very good at the Angel ("Engel") Inn in Kleinlützel, where we were served despite our late arrival (2 pm).

600 m elevation climb this morning, often along the French border

Not all bridges are good to cross...

Sofia advised us to go via Kleinlützel, more direct than via Laufen.

Ponchos...

The rain forced us to wear our ponchos all morning today...

Accueil fantastique chez Sofia à Flüh (SO)

Merci, Sofia!

Not only does she paint beautifully, Sofia gave us a wonderful welcome at her B&B in Flüh, just over the cantonal border from Basel, in the Canton of Solothurn. Great meals and exceptional sharing about faith... with a blessing prayer over us thus morning that really touched us. Thank you, Sofia!

Michel en Suisse, Jeff en France... à 2 m d'écart !

Michel is on the trail just within Switzerland, I'm taking the photo from 2 meters away, in France!

Once out of the city, the trail often runs right along the border line between France (on the right side of the path here) and Switzerland, on the left. Hard to imagine what this border looked like during the war..

The great Dutch philosopher and theologian Erasmus of Rotterdam died in Basel in 1536 and was buried here in the cathedral.

Guide: Karl Meyer

In the cathedral, Karl spontaneously offered to show us several very interesting things that we would never have seen without him. An unplanned but very pleasant encounter -- thank you, Karl!

Basel cathedral

The Basel Cathedral, with a sign which reminds us that the church is always a "work in progress'...

Our pilgrimage from Basel to Vevey begins at the Rhine River... much larger here than at its source, where we hopped over it in 2 steps in July!

Fini pour cette fois-ci... / That's all for now...

Since recent health issues have made it unwise for me to hike alone these days, I've stopped here (Furka Pass), for the moment. But I'm delighted to have done these stages with Bethany + Michel in the cantons of the Grisons and Uri!
