De retour sur le Sentier des Huguenots – en Allemagne ! Back on the Huguenot Trail – into Germany

 Voilà presque 3 ans qu’il n’y a pas eu de nouveau poste sur ce blog… Oui, c’était le 23 août 2022 que j’avais écrit « Et après ?... » Eh bien, notre parcours de vie ne suit pas toujours ce que nous avions prévu. L’accompagnement des réfugiés ukrainiens (beaucoup plus chamboulés par les imprévus que nous suisses), un déménagement pour raisons familiales, une forme physique pas toujours au top mais, à présent le moment semble enfin venu pour remettre le sac à dos et retrouver les chemins !

L’une des options évoquées en 2022 était de poursuivre le Sentier des Huguenots depuis la frontière suisse vers le nord de l’Allemagne. Et c’est le choix retenu pour 2025. Le 23 juin, je repartirai avec mon copain de marche Michel Bovay, depuis Schaffhouse, en suivant les routes historiques des réfugiés protestants de France (huguenots) ou du Piémont italien (« vaudois » du Piémont), en traversant la Forêt-Noire par des anciennes routes postales ou le long de fleuves comme le Neckar. L’objectif cette année sera les 210 km jusqu’à Calw, trajet prévu en 2 semaines.

Nous sommes très reconnaissants pour l’aide de l’association allemande “Hugenotten- und Waldenserpfad e.V” qui fournit des cartes, dépliants, carnets de route et site Internet (www.hugenotten-waldenerpfad.eu) que nous vous recommandons vivement. Le nom de l’association fait le lien avec deux de mes marches précédentes, la Voie de l’exil des vaudois du Piémont, en Italie et en France (2018), et le Sentier des Huguenots à travers la Suisse (2021).

It’s been almost 3 years since my last post on this blog… Yes, it was August 23^rd, 2022 that I wrote “What’s next?”  Well, our life’s journey doesn’t always follow what we had foreseen. My work with Ukrainian refugees (who are much more thrown into turmoil than are we Swiss), a move back to the Gros-de-Vaud for family reasons, and a less-than-perfect physical form have held me back, but now the time finally seems right to put on the backpack again and hit the trails!

One of the options mentioned in 2022 was to continue on the Huguenot Trail, from the Swiss border north into Germany. And that is the choice we’ve made for 2025. On June 23^rd, I’ll set off again with my hiking friend Michel Bovay, leaving from Schaffhausen and following the historic routes of Protestant refugees from France and the Italian Piedmont, going through the Black Forest via old postal routes or along rivers like the Neckar. The objective will be about 210 km to the town of Calw, planned to be hiked in 2 weeks.

We are very grateful to the German Huguenot and Waldenser Trail Association (“Hugenotten- und Waldenserpfad e.V”) for their maps, brochures, hiking passports and website (www.hugenotten-waldenerpfad.eu) which we encourage you to consult. The association’s name makes the link with two of my previous hikes, on the Waldensian Exile Trail in Italy and France (2018) and the Huguenot Trail across Switzerland (2021).

Le dernier bout... / The last stretch...

Le dernier bout de cette marche longe le lac et nous mène jusqu'à Hergiswil, dans le canton de Nidwald. 

The last stretch of this hike goes along the lake and brings us to Hergiswil, in the canton of Nidwald.

Et voilà, c'est fait: avec la traversée de Zoug et de Lucerne ces 4 derniers jours, j'ai fini mon tour des 26 cantons de la Suisse! 

Et après? Retourner en Italie? Continuer le Sentier des Huguenots vers le nord de l'Allemagne? On verra comment les choses évoluent d'ici l'année prochaine... Il y a toujours un nouveau chemin à découvrir, et de nouvelles rencontres qui nous attendent!

And so, it's done: with the crossing of the cantons of Zug and Lucerne these past 4 days, I have now finished my tour of the 26 cantons of Switzerland! 

What's next? Back to Italy? Continue the Huguenot Trail up through Germany? We'll see how things evolve between now and next year... There's always somewhere new to hike, and new encounters waiting for us!

Katholische Kirche Horw

Dans l'église catholique de Horw, nous trouvons une statue de St-Jacques pèlerin et un autre symbole de solidarité avec le peuple d'Ukraine...

In the Catholic church in Horw we see a statue of St. James as pilgrim, and another sign of solidarity with the people of Ukraine...

Nous quittons le bord du lac pour traverser une péninsule et nous diriger vers Horw. Le chemin monte... mais nous offre de belles vues sur le lac et les montagnes autour.

We leave the lakeshore to cross over a peninsula and head towards Horw. The trail goes up... but offers us some beautiful views over the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Waldstätterweg n° 98

Aujourd'hui nous longeons d'abord le lac et suivrons principalement le chemin n° 98, le "Waldstätterweg", qui prend son nom des 4 cantons "forestiers" qu'on trouve autour du lac du même nom: Lucerne, Schwyz, Uri et Nidwald (un "demi-canton" du canton original Unterwald). On passe devant un bateau qui porte le nom du lac puis, un peu plus loin, devant un musée dédié au compositeur Richard Wagner, qui séjourna ici de 1866 à 1872.

Today we start our hike along the lakeside and then follow trail n° 98, the "Waldstätterweg", which takes its name from the 4 "forest" cantons that border the lake of the same name: Lucerne, Schwyz, Uri and Nidwald (a "half-canton" of the original Unterwald). We pass in front of a tour boat that bears the name of the lake then, a bit further on, by a museum dedicated to the famous composer Richard Wagner, who lived here from 1866 to 1872.

Lucerne: l'église franciscaine / the Franciscan church

A l'Office du Tourisme on nous a indiqué qu'on pouvait trouver un "Stämpel" (tampon) pour nos crédenciales à l'église franciscaine, comme Lucerne se trouve sur l'un des chemins de Compostelle qui traversent la Suisse. Nous avons de la peine à trouver mais on finit quand même pour l'avoir au bureau paroissial à côté. Le sacristain nous montre après qu'il y a un petit écriteau dans l'église sous la statue de St-Jacques... enfant, représenté avec ses parents Salomé et Zébédée et son frère Jean. Jésus a appelés ces deux frères les "fils du tonnerre", donc on peut imaginer qu'ils avaient du caractère!

At the Tourist Office we had been told that we could find a "Stämpel" (rubber stamp) for our pilgrim passports in the Franciscan church, since Lucerne is on one of the the main routes of the Way of St. James across Switzerland. We have trouble finding the stamp but finally do so at the parish office next door to the church. The sacristan takes us back into the church and shows us a little sign under the statue of St. James... as a child, represented with his parents Salomé and Zebedee, and his brother John. Jesus called these two brothers "sons of thunder", so we can imagine that they must have had quite a personality!
