Le Chemin de St-Patrick / St. Patrick's Way

     A peine rentré des 12 jours de marche sur le Sentier des Huguenots et des Vaudois du Piémont, en Allemagne, puis d’un voyage en voiture en Toscane pour enterrer les cendres de notre amie de longue date, Valjeanne, je repars ce vendredi pour une nouvelle marche : le Chemin de Saint-Patrick, en Irlande du Nord. (voir carte à droite, qui paraît dans la brochure de l’office du tourisme)

Not long after my 12 days of hiking on the Huguenot and Waldensian Trail, in Germany, followed by a trip by car to Tuscany to bring the ashes of our long-time friend, Valjeanne, to her final resting place, I’m off again this Friday for a new hike: St. Patrick’s Way, in Northern Ireland. (see map at right, which appears in the brochure from the tourist office)

L’Irlande, c’est un vieux rêve. Ma mère, née Kathleen Loretta Ryan (de souche très irlandaise), avait voyagé sur l’Île Emeraude dans les années 60 et 70, et avait même flirté avec l’idée d’éventuellement retourner vivre dans le pays de ces ancêtres… Mais moi, je n’y ai jamais mis les pieds.

Ireland has been a dream for a long time. My mother, born Kathleen Loretta Ryan (very Irish roots), had travelled to the Emerald Isle in the 60s and 70s, and even toyed with the idea of eventually returning to live in the country of her ancestors… But me, I’ve never been there.

Suite à la découverte par notre fille Christy d’un sentier « St. Patrick’s Way », créé par un pèlerin d’Irlande du Nord qui avait fait le Camino de Santiago, en Espagne, j’ai regardé de plus près les possibilités de faire ce chemin. D’abord, ça me semblait trop cher : pas du tout la même infrastructure qu’au Camino, et dans un pays où la vie est chère. Plus le vol pour y aller, etc.

Following the discovery by my daughter Christy of a “St. Patrick’s Way” trail, created by a pilgrim from Northern Ireland who had hiked the Camino de Santiago, in Spain, I checked out possibilities to hike this trail. At first, it seemed too expensive : no infrastructure comparable to the Camino, and in a country where the cost of living is high. Plus the flights, etc.

Puis un ami de Belfast m’a aidé à trouver des hébergements plus abordables. Et, surtout, lorsque j’ai rendu visite en avril à Margriet, l’épouse de mon frère Steve, qui est décédé le 1^er mars cette année, elle m’a proposé de financer ce pèlerinage en souvenir de mon frère, qui aurait été très heureux de me voir enfin découvrir cette belle île que lui et Margriet avaient visitée ensemble à l’époque ou ma mère et son mari Léo y allaient. C’est donc grâce à ce soutien très généreux de Margriet (et de Steve) que je pars à Belfast ce vendredi.

Then an old friend in Belfast helped me to find some cheaper accommodations. And, especially, when I went in April to visit Margriet, the wife of my brother Steve, who had passed away March 1^st this year, she offered to finance this pilgrimage in memory of my brother, who would have been very happy to see me finally discover this beautiful island which he and Margriet had visited together long ago, in the years that my mother and her husband Leo went there. So it is thanks to the very generous support of Margriet (and of Steve) that I’m leaving for Belfast this Friday.

Alors, je retrouve mon « vieux » copain de marche, Michel Bovay, pour découvrir ensemble ce chemin qui porte le nom du saint patron d’Irlande. Je me réjouis de partager ce voyage avec vous, par ce blog… même si les photos et les commentaires viendront probablement un peu plus tard, comme avec ma marche précédente en Allemagne en juillet. Mais ça viendra !

And so, I’m teaming up once again with my “old” hiking companion, Michel Bovay, to discover together this trail that bears the name of the patron saint of Ireland. I’m looking forward to sharing this trip with you, via this blog… even if the photos and commentaries will probably be posted a bit later, as I had to do with my previous hike in Germany, in July. But they will arrive!
