Hermann Hesse (1877-1962), né à Calw, fut un grand écrivain allemand, Prix Nobel de littérature en 1946, opposant aux excès de l'industrialisation et de l'urbanisation. Il a notamment écrit Siddhartha et Le loup des steppes, dont le groupe rock "Steppenwolf" ('Born to be Wild') a tiré son nom.
On voit ici à Calw sa statue et sa maison natale, dans un Marktplatz de toute beauté.
