8 août / August 8th : Armagh

Ce samedi matin nous prenons le bus Translink pour rejoindre la petite ville d’Armagh, le point de départ pour le Chemin de St-Patrick, à une heure de route à l’ouest de Belfast. Nous sommes très bien accueillis à l’Office du Tourism par Don et Tanya, qui nous donnent des infos précieuses et nous remettent aussi nos passeports de pèlerin et la brochure avec les cartes de marche.

This Saturday morning we take the Translink bus to travel to the town of Armagh, the starting point for the St. Patrick’s Way (trail), about an hour’s drive to the west from Belfast. We are warmly welcomed at the Tourist Office by Don and Tanya, who give us important information and also our pilgrim passports and the brochure with precious hiking maps.

    En traversant le “Mall” au centre d’Armagh, nous passons à côté d’un match de cricket en cours, puis d’un concours – en kilt – du lever de grosses pierres, qui nous rappelle le lancer de la « pierre d’Unspunnen » en Suisse, mais les pierres ici sont encore plus lourdes ! La mairesse du lieu participe à une séance photo pour soutenir la manifestation… mais elle n’essaie pas vraiment de soulever ces pierres de plus de 115 kg chacun...

When crossing “the Mall”, we pass by a cricket match in progress and a competition of stone-lifting – in kilts – that reminds us of the “Unspunnen” stone-throwing competition in Switzerland, but the stones here are even heavier! The local mayor participates in a photo-op to support the competition… but does not really attempt to lift these stones of more than 115 kg each …
