Armagh : 1 city, 2 cathedrals

Armagh est généralement considérée comme la plus ancienne ville d’Irlande, ses origines remontant à environ 6 500 ans. La mission de saint Patrick a débuté près de Downpatrick (où s’achève ce parcours) ; c’est à Saul, près de Downpatrick, qu’il fonda sa première église chrétienne en 432 après J.-C., un chef local lui ayant cédé une grange pour y célébrer ses premiers offices religieux. C'est également un chef local d'Armagh, qui aurait été guéri par Patrick, qui, en 445 après J.-C., lui a cédé une colline pour y construire une église, à l'emplacement même où se dresse aujourd'hui la cathédrale de l'Église d'Irlande. Armagh est l'une des rares villes à posséder deux cathédrales et les 2 portent le nom de St-Patrick : l'une pour l'Église d'Irlande (anglicane) et l'autre pour l'Église catholique romaine. La ville est le siège du primat de toute l'Irlande pour ces deux Églises.

Armagh is widely considered as the oldest city in Ireland, with origins about 6500 years ago. St. Patrick’s mission started near Downpatrick (where this trail ends), and he founded his first Christian church in AD 432 near there, where a local chieftain gave him a barn to hold his first worship services. It was also a local chieftain here in Armagh, who was reportedly healed by Patrick, who in AD 445 gave him a hill here to build a church, where the Church of Ireland cathedral now stands. Armagh is one of the very rare cities with two cathedrals, and both are named St. Patrick: one for the Church of Ireland (Anglican) and the other Roman Catholic, and the city is the seat of the Primate of All Ireland for both churches.
