Pforzheim – variante

In Wurmberg, we could have taken a detour westward to visit the city of Pforzheim, whose history has been shaped by Huguenot refugees, 60 of whom arrived in Pforzheim in 1688. The founding of the colony in 1700 was followed by the establishment of numerous artisanal workshops: hatmakers, wigmakers, barbers, pastry chefs, candlemakers, a tobacco factory, a stocking factory, and—supported by a margrave’s edict of 1767—the jewelry and watchmaking industries. These activities contributed to the city’s economic boom, which continues to this day, and earned it the nickname “City of Gold.” The Huguenots’ social commitment was particularly evident in their care for and education of orphans and in providing schooling for girls.
