Vers Sinsheim / Onward to Sinsheim

Une balise pas très claire et nous partons sur un mauvais chemin… mais Jean-Philippe s’en rend compte assez vite et nous retrouvons le bon sentier, qui nous mène jusqu’à Sinsheim. La chambre d’hôtel là-bas est étouffante, hélas. Au moins il y a la télé pour regarder la 2^e mi-temps de la demi-finale de la Coupe du Monde entre la France et l’Espagne…

A confusing trail marker and off we go down the wrong trail… but Jean-Philippe realizes our error fairly quickly and we’re able to get back on the right trail, which leads us to the next town, Sinsheim. Our hotel room there is suffocatingly warm, unfortunately. At least there’s a TV so we can watch the 2^nd half of the World Cup semifinal between France and Spain…

A propos de moi

J'ai découvert les joies du pèlerinage à pied en faisant le Chemin de St-Jacques, depuis la Suisse jusqu'à St-Jacques de Compostelle, en 2003. J'ai eu la chance de bénéficier de plusieurs mois de congé sabbatique de mon travail de pasteur dans l'Eglise réformée, ce qui m'a permis de faire les 2000 km d'une traite.

Après quelques difficultés de santé, j'ai pu faire le Chemin de St-François (2010), en Italie, la Via Francigena (2012-2014) depuis la Suisse jusqu'à Rome (pour la plupart, accompagné de ma fille Bethany, qui a aussi fait le Camino de Santiago en 2011), et le Chemin de Stevenson (2015), dans le Sud de la France. Au moment de ma retraite (été 2016), je suis parti de St-Maurice (Suisse) pour faire la partie nord de la Via Francigena, jusqu'à Cantorbéry, en Angleterre. Après 480 km, mon corps a dit "stop" ... du moins pour le moment...

En juillet 2017 j'ai pu faire 3 semaines de marche sur le Chemin de St-Jacques avec Bethany, entre la Suisse et Le Puy-en-Velay, un bon "test"... Puis je suis reparti sur la Via Francigena le 10 septembre, de l'endroit où j'ai dû arrêter une année avant, pour rallier enfin Cantorbéry... où je suis arrivé le 10 octobre 2017 !

En juin 2018, j'ai parcouru avec mon collègue retraité Michel Lemaire la "Voie de l'Exil des Vaudois" du Piémont italien (à l'ouest de Turin) à travers les Alpes et la Savoie, jusqu'à Genève. C'est la route suivie pendant la déportation des protestants par le Duc de Savoie, suite à la Révocation de l'Edit de Nantes, fin 17e siècle.

En juin-juillet 2019, j'ai parcouru la Via Francisca del Lucomagno (Lukmanier, col alpin entre les Grisons et le Tessin), aussi appelée la "route des Empereurs", depuis le Lac de Constance jusqu'à Pavie, en Italie. Au Moyen-âge, les empereurs germaniques passaient par là pour aller à Rome, suivant la Via Francigena depuis Pavie.

En juillet 2020, je veux découvrir le nouveau raccordement du Camino de Santiago entre les Grisons et le Valais, passant 2 cols alpins entre la vallée du Rhin et celle du Rhône. C'est le chemin "Rhin - Reuss - Rhône" entre Disentis GR et Brigue VS (voir carte). Je suis accompagné cette fois par ma fille Bethany et Michel Bovay, autre ami retraité de Saillon, et mon épouse Donna qui assure la "voiture suiveuse".

Fin septembre 2020, je suis reparti avec Michel Bovay pour quelques étapes sur le chemin parcouru au 12e siècle par le moine islandais Nikulas de Munkathvera, entre Bâle et Vevey, en route pour Rome et Jérusalem... AIVF a mis en valeur ce chemin il y a une dizaine d'années, et nous sommes reconnaissants pour leur cartes sur ce bout de pèlerinage.

En juin 2021, Michel Bovay et moi avons fini ce parcours, de Büren an der Aare jusqu'à Vevey.

L'été 2021 me voit aussi traverser la Suisse sur le Sentier des Huguenots, de Genève à Schaffhouse, accompagné par différentes personnes selon les étapes. Ce sentier suit la route des réfugiés protestants qui fuyaient la persécution en France à la fin du 17e siècle, à la suite de la Révocation de l'Edit de Nantes par Louis XIV en 1685.

Pendant l'été 2022, j'ai traversé les 4 derniers cantons suisses (des 26 au total) où je n'avais pas encore marché: d'abord Appenzell Rhodes-Intérieures et Glaris, suivi en aoùt par Zoug et Lucerne.

En juin 2025, j'ai enfin repris le sac à dos et les bâtons pour continuer le Sentier des Huguenots avec Michel Bovay, depuis Schaffhouse pour les 200+ premiers km en Allemagne.

About me

I discovered the joys of pilgrimage by walking the Way of St. James, from Switzerland to Santiago de Compostela in 2003. I was fortunate to have several months of sabbatical leave from my work as a pastor in the Swiss Reformed Church, so I was able to hike the 2000 km in one go.

After some health issues, I was able to hike the Way of St. Francis (2010), in Italy, the Via Francigena from Switzerland to Rome (2012-2014, mostly with my daughter Bethany, who has also done the Camino de Santiago), and the Stevenson Trail (2015), in southern France. Once retired (summer 2016), I set off from St-Maurice (Switzerland) to do the northern half of the Via Francigena, to Canterbury, England. After 480 km my body said "stop", at least for the moment...

In July 2017, I hiked 3 weeks with my daughter Bethany on the Way of St. James between Switzerland and Le Puy-en-Velay, a good "test"... I set off again on the Via Francigena on September 10th, from where I had to stop a year earlier, and hoping this time to finally make it to Canterbury... where I arrived on October 10, 2017 !

In June 2018, I hiked with my retired colleague Michel Lemaire along the "Waldensian Exile Trail" from the Piedmont region of Italy (SW of Torino) across the Alps and Savoy to Geneva. It's the route along which the Protestants of Savoy were deported at the end of the 17th Century, following the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes.

In June-July 2019, I hiked alone the Via Francisca del Lucomagno, also called the Route of the Emperors, from Lake Constance over the Alps via the Lukmanier Pass to Pavia, in Italy. In the Middle Ages, the Germanic emperors followed this route on their way to Rome, as they linked up with the Via Francigena in Pavia.

In July 2020, I discover the new Camino trail between the Swiss cantons of Graubünden and the Valais, via 2 Alpine passes between the Rhine and Rhone valleys. It's the "Rhine - Reuss - Rhone" trail, between Disentis and Brig (see map). I'm accompanied by my daughter Bethany, as well as Michel Bovay, another retired friend from Saillon, and my wife Donna with the car.

At the end of September 2020, I set off again with Michel Bovay for a few stages along the pilgrim path done in the 12th century by Icelandic monk Nikulas of Munkathvera, between Basel and Vevey, on his way to Rome and Jerusalem... AIVF drew attention to this route about 10 years ago, and we are grateful to be able to use their maps for our pilgrim hike.

In June 2021, Michel Bovay and I completed this hike from Büren an der Aare to Vevey.

In the summer of 2021 I also set off to cross Switzerland from Geneva to Schaffhausen on the Huguenot Trail, accompanied by different people for different sections of the trail. This trail follows the route taken by Protestants who fled persecution in France at the end of the 17th century, after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685.

For the summer of 2022, the goal was to hike across the 4 remaining Swiss cantons (out of 26) where I had not yet hiked. In July, we did Appenzell (AI) and Glarus (GL), followed in August by Zug (ZG) and Lucerne (LU).

In June 2025, Michel Bovay and I finally resume our hike on the Huguenot Trail where we left off in Schaffhausen, for the first 200+ km in Germany.
